What can YOU do

What can you do to help stop this mine?

First get informed,  then get involved.  If you are here you're getting informed.  Now to make a difference please GET INVOLVEDPass this information on to as many friends as you know and have them sign the petitions, write their congressman (us postal mail preferred), and attend the meetings.  We have contacted everybody in our E-mail Address Book whether they live in Arizona or visit Arizona. Write your state and federal representatives and let them know you want major changes to the mining laws and restrictions on water use and contamination by the mines.  Also let them know that you want the Sonoita-Patagonia corridor to be preserved!  We are tired of the public suffering long after the profits have disappeared from mining operations.  We suffer with polluted water, destroyed land, and higher taxes to support the superfunds necessary to clean up centuries of unregulated mining in America.  Watch the National Geographic video U.S. Mining Law contested http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2008/02/080201-hardrock-video-wc.html

Next, if you don't want the Rosemont or Patagonia mines sign these petitions and if you can spare a dime donate it to the Save the Scenic Santa Ritas (SSSR) in the name of the Mountain Empire Action Alliance.

MOST IMPORTANTLY!

Send in effective comments to the Forest Service for the NEPA study.   If you have areas of expertise please read the Rosemont mine plan of operations and identify concerns and alternative options.  It is important to identify any potential alternative options for your concerns in the comments made to the Forest Service.  They have to research any reasonable alternatives and all concerns.  Be very specific and detailed and not emotional.   Once the public comment period is over it is too late!  The Mountain Empire Action Alliance worked as a team to address many concerns and possible alternatives the the current MPO.  To read their 36 page document click here  The Forest service says comments will be accepted and provided the same considerations as those submitted before the recorded end of the public scoping process on July 14, 2008.

To E-mail comments comments-southwestern-coronado@fs.fed.us  (you can copy/paste questions from our list of questions into your e-mail if you want to.

Also let the representatives who are opposed to the proposed Rosemont mine that we sincerely appreciate their efforts, including Pima County Supervisor Ray Carrol, representative Raul Grijalva, and representative Gabrielle Giffords.  They have been outstanding in their efforts to stop this mine and future mines from being developed in the Santa Rita's.

Support passage of  H.R. 2262: Hardrock Mining and Reclamation Act of 2007.  This bill has been passed in the House. The bill now goes on to the Senate. Keep in mind that debate may be taking place on a companion bill in the Senate, rather than on this particular bill. [Last Updated: Jan 26, 2008] http://www.govtrack.us/  is a great site to find out how your congressman vote on various issues.
